How Mayo Masks Help Hair and a DIY Recipe

Mayo masks are a healthy hair powerhouse because they combine eggs with proteins to stimulate hair growth and strength, olive oil which penetrates the strand to nourish it while providing antifungal and anti-inflammatory benefits for your scalp.

Mayo and masks contain lemon juice which can help reduce dandruff and clean buildup giving you a lustrous shine, and honey which has been cited to reduce dandruff and condition hair. Best of all mayo hair masks are easy to DIY at home.

Below you’ll find how to make your own mayo hair mask as well as learn about how these ingredients mix together to help your hair shine to its full potential.

DIY Mayo Hair Mask

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup mayo
  • 1 raw egg yolk, room temperature
  • 1 tablespoons olive or avocado oil
  • 2 tablespoons honey

The Steps to Make a Mayo Hair Mask:

  1. Whisk the ingredients together so they blend and smooth out.
  2. Wet or dampen your hair.
  3. Gently massage the mask onto your scalp and into your hair.
    1. A wide-tooth comb may help ensure even application.
  4. Cover your hair with a shower cap or plastic wrap and leave the mask on for 20-30 minutes.
    1. If you have long hair, use a coil hair tie to secure it in a bun so the cap can hold it in place easier as coil hair ties are easier to clean than cloth or elastic.
  5. Rinse your hair in the shower and double-wash it with your favorite shampoo and lukewarm water.

While the mask is doing its thing, here’s how each of the ingredients works to give you shiny and healthy looking hair.

Egg yolks contain 26.5 grams of lipid fats per 100 grams which helps to enhance softness, and 15.9 grams of proteins which helps keep your hair healthy when you get enough. The olive oil works to protect your hair from environmental damage with its antioxidant and antifungal properties.

Although the citric acid in lemon can lift the cuticle layers which is how sun bleaching works, there is also vitamin C within the juice which helps protect your scalp and hair from environmental factors like ozone gas and UV rays.

Honey is a natural way to condition hair while reducing dandruff, and you can always substitute the olive oil for avocado oil which is known to moisturize your hair.
