How to do a Bubble Braid with Alternating Twists

We all love bubble braids, but if you want a new “twist” on this classic style, we’ve got you covered. Adding hair twists in between bubbles, or at different intervals gives you more texture and fun with this look.

Twists are easy to add in and only take a second keeping this style at a skill level anyone can do. Because you can leave bangs out for face shaping, the look works for everyone.

Once you get the hang of twists, you could go more advanced and do braids, or multiple mix and match variations.  For now, here’s how to do a bubble braid with twists in between the bubbles.

Skill level: Basic
Face shape: All
Hair length: Medium long to long

You will need:

To create this look:

  1. Brush your hair free from knots and tangles.
  2. Gather your hair at the crown of your head, or wherever you want the twisty bubble braid to start and secure it in a ponytail with a hair tie.
  3. Decide if you want to start with a twist or a bubble and:
    1. Twists: Separate the ponytail into two sections and with two fingers, twist the two sections into coils but stop before they fold in.
    2. Bubbles: Add a hair tie about 2 inches down and then tease out a bubble shape.
  4. Now do the opposite and form either a twist or a bubble so you get the alternating style.
  5. Repeat until you reach where you want the bubble braid to end, and secure it with the hair tie to create the final bubble or twist.
  6. Tease out the bubbles so they’re the correct size, and if you want to prevent flyaways, give it a mist with a light hairspray.
The bubble braid with interchanging twists is an easy and fun spin on the classic bubble braid style. If you found our tutorial helpful, enter your email below and we’ll send you updates when we launch new style guides.
