5 Back to School Medium Hairstyles That Serve

The first day of school is easy when you feel confident.  You don't have to let an uncomfortable hairstyle prevent you from catching up over what happened in summer and making new friends.  So we’ve come up with this year’s hottest styles for medium length hair that help you go back to school with confidence.

Four can be styled quickly if you’re in a rush, and they work for all face shapes as they allow bangs or your hair to be pulled back. Best of all they keep your hair in place so you can focus on the energy of back to school.

Your style will be serving so you can EAT your entrance and rule the school!

Hair Clip Half-up Half-down

There’s nothing more on point than a claw clip half-up half-down this year. You get the 90’s vibe with a pop of color to match your outfit. If you want to let your hair down, the clip comes out easy.

And it can double as a fidget if you’re nervous during class or orientation. It looks great curly, straight, or wavy, so do whatever makes you feel confident and ready to rule.

  1. Use a brush to remove tangles and knots.
  2. Separate your hair horizontally about the height of your eyes.
  3. Split the top section into a right and left side if you want a center part and pull it to the back of your head.
  4. Secure it with the hair clip.
  5. Style the lower portion to your preference.

Wavy Blunt Bob

From Dua Lipa to Miley, blunt bobs are back! You can texture them for movement and flow, and they sit comfy so you can enjoy the start of the school year.

We’re going with heatless waves for this one because summer can be harsh on hair, and fall tends to be a season where hair appears to shed more.  You’ll want to prepare this style the night before using our guide to heatless curls so you can make it work before you head to school.

  1. Remove tangles and knots with a brush.
  2. Dampen your hair and add a styling mousse throughout your hair with your fingers.
  3. Now create between 3 and 9 small ponytails and secure them with a tiny hair tie.
  4. Wrap each ponytail into a bun and secure it with another hair tie so it holds tight while you sleep.
  5. In the morning carefully release each bun and ponytail and loosen the curls into waves carefully with your fingers. You don’t want to use a comb or brush because they may pull the waves out.
  6. Add some extra strength to the waves with a light hairspray, and you’re done!

Classic Blunt Shag

Vintage is back, and nothing is more timeless than the blunt shag cut. It has movement, gives a rebellious and fun vibe, and has texture with its choppy layers. You can style it with a relaxed t-shirt or wear it with a light jacket and layers.

From rock and roll to boho, and even a hippy vibe, this style morphs to wherever your year will take you. And it is easy to grow out if you want long hair for winter formal. This style needs a professional hairdresser to trim as it is advanced, so it is more about styling it to match your look.

Dutch Braid Pigtails

They’re fun, they keep your hair from tangling, and work for all classes including gym and biology. And if your hair needs a break from brushing and UV damage all summer, this style can hold for a few days giving your locks time to relax.

The Dutch braid is more pronounced and you can soften it from a sports look by teasing the weave with your fingers for a thicker look. And if you use spiral hair ties, you can add pops of color to the ends that match your outfit.

  1. Brush out tangles and knots from your hair.
  2. Split it down the center into a right and left side.
  3. Starting on one side, take three strands of hair in the front side of your head (between the top and your temple) and weave the left strand under the middle, then repeat with the right.
  4. Note underneath weaving is a Dutch braid and over the center is a French braid.
  5. Now add equal size strands of hair from underneath to the weave, and repeat the process.
  6. Keep doing this until you reach where you want the braid to end, and finish the bottom with the hair tie and do the other side.

You can tease the weave if you’d like the braids to be fuller, and secure flyaways with a light hairspray once you get the look you want.

Scrunchie Barbie Ponytail

When you need fast style, but don’t want a look that falls flat, a scrunchie barbie ponytail is the answer. If you have time you can add a swoop, and if you’re in a hurry, this only takes a minute to create.
  1. Brush your hair free from knots and tangles
  2. Pull your hair back to the crown of your head and secure it in a ponytail with a hair tie leaving about an inch between your head and the hair tie.
  3. Tease a hole through the center of the space you left and flip the ponytail through the hole from underneath.
  4. Add a scrunchie to the top of the ponytail and finish with a light hairspray to control flyaways.
