How to do a Classic Braided Half-up Hair Tie Hairdo

Ready for a new way to style your long hair that has texture, movement, and that works all season long? We’ve got you covered with an easy to do classic braided half-up hairstyle.

Use asymmetrical and curled bangs in the front for a formal event, the braids add flow and dimension, and wear this style messy or teased for a day out with friends.  It even works for school as it can be styled clean with tight braids and a sleek ponytail in back.

Because your hair can be lifted into a ponytail for spring and summer, or left flowing free over your shoulders for fall and winter, it works for all seasons.  It’s an all face shapes hairstyle too because the bangs can be left out to frame your face, and you only need to know how to do a classic hair braid to do it.

Skill level: Beginner
Face shape: All
Hair length: Long

You Will Need:

To create this look:

  1. Brush your hair to remove knots and tangles.
  2. Separate two medium size sections of hair on each side of your head right around your temples and secure each with a hair tie.
  3. Pull the rest of your hair back behind your head.
  4. Undo the hair tie on one side and begin braiding it.
    1. Split the hair into three smaller sections.
    2. Cross the right side over the middle, then the left over the middle, and repeat.
    3. Once you get to the back of your head, secure the braid in the hair tie again.
  5. Now repeat on the other side.
  6. Once both braids are braided, secure them at their base using the third hair tie like in the photo above.
  7. Now style the bottom sections of hair so they form a ponytail or flow into the lower section of hair.
  8. The last step is to spritz the braids with a finishing spray to prevent flyaways, but this is optional.

You can be as creative as you want here. For example you can flip the ponytail up over the hair tie for extra depth like a barbie ponytail, or add ribbons into the braid for some pops of color and fabric. You can also curl the lower section or ponytail for added flow, bounce, and movement.

The classic braided half-up hairdo is about to become your new favorite go-to for long hair as it works year round, is easily customized, and looks great for all face shapes.
