A half-up hair bun is the ultimate long hair hairstyle as it is formal enough for work, and casual enough for hanging out with friends. The style is versatile as you can add braids for texture, go messy or sleek, and leave bangs to frame your face so it works for all face shapes.
Best of all it only takes a minute to do the basic version, so it’s sure to become your go-to long hair hairstyle when you’re in a hurry.
You will need:
To do this look:
- Comb or brush any knots and tangles out of your hair.
- Section your hair temple level into top and bottom sections.
- Pull the top section back to the crown of your head, or wherever you want the base of the bun to sit, and secure it into a high ponytail with the hair tie.
- Leave bangs out in this step if you’re going to use them to frame your face.
- Twist your hair into a coil, but not so much that it bends, and wrap it around the base of the ponytail.
- Tuck the tip into the hair tie, or secure it with a spiral hair tie to add a pop of color.
- Style the lower section.
- Spritz with a light hairspray or finishing spray to prevent flyaways.
- Wrapping a braid - Section off a chunk of the ponytail in step 3 and braid it. Wrap the braid around the base of the hair bun for a natural textured base and tuck the tip of the braid into the hair tie.
- Adding adornments - This style looks amazing with hair pins and they can be seasonal like snowflakes that sparkle for winter, and cherry blossoms or flowers for spring and summer.
- Ribbons - If you want some movement and flow, add a ribbon tied into a bow to the base of the bun as a way to secure the half-down portion while adding a pop of color.
