As the air becomes brisk, and pumpkin spice hits the coffee shops, your long hair deserves a break after getting UV damage from the summer sun, lightening, and to keep it healthy as the lack of humidity in the air can lead to breakage.
This is why changing up your routine to rehydrate your hair, using tools to reduce friction like coil hair ties, and wearing hairstyles with less pulling on your scalp is key to having healthy hair from fall to winter.
To help you keep your hair healthy from the start of fall to the holiday season, we’ve found five long hair hairstyles that hold comfortably and give your hair a much needed break.
Heatless Curls
It’s time to put the curling iron down, more heat dries out your hair and can cause more breakage. Instead try heatless curls if you want to keep the bounce when you have friends coming over.
- Dampen your hair and apply a styling mousse to it the night before.
- Separate your hair into 3 to 9 ponytails depending on how thick it is, and how tight you want the curls, then secure them with a tiny hair tie.
- Wrap each ponytail into a mini-bun and secure the tip into the hair tie.
- In the morning release each bun and run your fingers through to loosen the curls to the style you want without undoing them.
- Give them an extra bit of hold with a light hairspray.
A Loose High Ponytail or Messy Bun
If you want your hair off your shoulders so you can relax, give a classic high ponytail a try, or modify it to a messy bun. The bun can keep your hair in place, and the high ponytail keeps your hair out of the way if you’re working out or doing chores.
- Pull your hair back with your hands to the crown of your head.
- Secure it against your head without any pulling using a hair coil instead of an elastic hair tie for a loose high ponytail.
- With two fingers, twist the ponytail into a loose coil, then wrap it around the base of the ponytail securing it into the hair coil for a messy bun.
- You can use a second hair coil to secure the bun if you want to add a pop of color.
A Loose French Braid
If you work from home or have to take a call, a loose French braid has texture, flow, and looks fantastic. It only takes six steps to create and can be done towards the back of or off to the side of your head. If you want it thicker, you can tease the weave for a nice comforting fall look.
- Gently brush your hair to remove knots and tangles with a paddle brush.
- Paddle brushes help to evenly spread sebum, the natural oil that protects hair strands.
- Divide your hair into three small sections where you want the French braid to begin.
- Weave the right strand over the middle, then the left over the middle.
- Now add another small section of hair from below and repeat the process.
- Once you get to the bottom of the braid, secure it with a tiny or small hair tie depending on the thickness of your hair and the braid.
- Tease out the weave so it is at the desired thickness and finish with a light hair spray if you want to prevent flyaways.
Claw Clip French Twist
The claw clip French twist is easy to do, fast, and looks fantastic when you have guests coming over. And it keeps your hair out of the way when you’re doing chores. The claw clip adds a pop of color while letting your hair rest comfortably between the walls of the clip.
- Brush any knots or tangles out of your hair.
- Gather your hair to the back of your head like you’re doing a low ponytail and secure it with a hair tie.
- Twist the low ponytail into a coil with two fingers.
- Flatten the coil and fold it against your head so it can hold in place in the claw clip.
- With your other hand, secure the coil against your head with the claw clip making sure not to scratch your skin.
Half-Up With Twists
When you’re having company or have a work call, a half-up with Twists is a quick and easy style that has texture, movement, and only takes a minute to do. Best of all you only need a hair tie which can add a fun pop of color.
Because it is a loose hairstyle, there’s no excessive pulling on your scalp or hair so both can relax which is important in fall.
- Remove any knots or tangles out of your hair gently with a brush.
- Section your hair into an upper and lower section around the same height as your temples.
- Split the top section into a right and left side down the middle, and twist the two with your fingers so they form a loose coil.
- Secure the two coils in the back of your head with a hair tie and let the remainder of hair hang loose.
- Style the lower section and combine the loose hair from the twists in if you’d like.
