Whether you’re going on vacation and need a week's worth of styles, but are limited on space, or you want a showstopping look for a special event, AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Google Bard can help. The secret is knowing what to ask and how to ask it. So we asked marketing and technology expert Adam Riemer who has been mentioned in the NYTimes.com, Affiliate Summit, and is a columnist at SearchEngineJournal to help. Here's what he had to say.
When it comes to hairstyles and asking ai for recommendations, the secret is in defining what you want in the result by giving the chatbot what you have to work with. Here is a starting point of what to include when entering the question about hairstyles. Afterwards, I share three examples and what ChatGPT-4 recommended when I asked.
- Number of hairstyles you need
- Your hair length
- The shape of your face
- The tools you have available
- The outfit you’ll be wearing
- Event type
- Which type of hair you have
- How long it must hold for
- The time available to create the look
- Styling skill level
- Activities you’ll be doing
Here’s a few scenarios and the recommendations AI gave:
- First day of high school
- A week at the beach
- Going to a wedding
First Day of High School
The first day of high school is exciting, and the last thing on your mind should be how to style your hair. So let's use the above prompts, and add in some extra options to make sure it is high school specific. We can remove the activities you’ll be doing unless you have physed, as activities are more important for long days out and not a first day of high school.
Here is how I prompted ChatGPT-4 and a screenshot of the response:
“Can you please provide me with two hairstyle ideas for the first day of school. I am a 14 year old girl with medium length wavy hair and an oval shaped face. I love updos but don’t mind asymmetrical looks. I have three hair ties, hairspray, a curling iron, and two medium size claw hair clips but do not need to use all of them. The style needs to hold all day comfortably and match a t-shirt and jeans for a casual look. There will be 20 minutes to create the style, and I am a beginner when it comes to styling hair.”
When I put this exact prompt into ChatGPT-4 it provided two great options with the steps to create the look.
A Week at the Beach
The difference in prompting here is that we will be limited on space in our suitcases. And the beach can mean swimming, going out to dinner or a party, and sunbathing. We want to prompt that some of the styles should be for multiple activities, and some for specific beach activities.
Here is how I prompted ChatGPT-4 and a screenshot of the response:
“Can you please provide me with seven days worth of hairstyle ideas for a week-long trip to the beach. I am a 20 year old woman with medium length straight hair and a round shaped face. I plan on sunbathing so I'll need to be able to position my hair off my shoulders and back, swimming and going to fancy dinners and fun parties.
I am bringing five hair ties, hairspray, a curling iron, and two open claw hair clips, and bobby pins, but do not need to use all of them. At least two of the styles should be able to hold while I go into the ocean and then come back out to go to lunch, three of the styles should be able to be good for the beach and a party, and one of the styles should be for a fancy dinner. Please feel free to give more than 5 options, but not more than 9.”
Here’s what ChatGPT-4 gave as a response:
In the response ChatGPT specifies which occasions and styles it matches for, while trying to sell you on why you should go with the style. This should help make the planning process easy. In total it gave nine options to choose from.
Going to a Wedding
Just like we did above, we want to consider the atmosphere and what we’ll be doing. Is the wedding indoors or outdoors, will we be dancing or relaxing, and what is the season or theme of the wedding? You can also mention the type of dress, but right now this doesn’t create a substantially different result.
By incorporating these into our prompt we can have ChatGPT recommend something that works for this special occasion.
Here is the prompt I used and a screenshot of the response:
“Can you please provide me with three hairstyle ideas for a fall wedding that I am attending. I am a 26 year old woman with long curly hair and a heart shaped face. I love updos but don’t mind asymmetrical looks. I have a flat iron, 2 hair ties, 2 scrunchies, and 2 hair clips that I can use to style, but I don't need to use any of them. The look should be great for formal wear, but also hold strong while I dance at night. Because I'll be wearing it for more than 8 hours, it should be comfortable. I also don't mind changing the style from formal during the ceremony in the morning to more relaxed in the evening for dancing at the reception. My dress is a halter dress that is floor length.”
Here’s what ChatGPT-4 gave as a response:
ChatGPT gave us options that work for both times of day, the right hair length, and it added in how to do the styles. It's definitely a good idea to test the instructions before the big day, just to make sure they work.
