When you want a hairstyle with texture and movement that is functional for sports or the gym, we’ve got you covered. This spin on two classic hairstyles, the high ponytail and French braid, lets your hair rest against your head so it fits under a softball helmet or headgear, while keeping your hair pulled back so it stays out of your face while you play.
This look is sometimes known as the French mohawk braided ponytail. It’s the best of both worlds because it is fashionable to wear, functional for sports, and easy to style. If you’re playing on a team, it can be fun to match your team colors with hair ties to show some extra team spirit.
Pro-tip: French braiding is where you cross the sections of hair over the top of the middle section, and Dutch braiding is when you cross underneath. French braids have a softer look and Dutch have a more pronounced texture, so have fun experimenting with both.
You will need:
- A hairbrush
- A hair tie to secure the ponytail
- Finishing spray (optional)
To create the look:
- Smooth your hair with the hair brush so all knots and tangles have been removed.
- Section half of the hair on top of your head horizontally like you’re doing a half-up hairstyle, and split off three small chunks of hair in the front. This becomes the start of the French braid.
- Weave the right side over the middle, then the left over the middle.
- Now take the next equal sized section of hair from below and add it to the braid with the same weaving movements.
- Continue this until you reach the back of the crown of your head and secure low lower section and remaining hair into a ponytail with your hair tie.
If you want to keep flyaways off the braid, spritz it with the finishing spray.
