There’s practically no long hair hairstyle more iconic for summer than pigtails. They can be left long like a ponytail, braided in French or fishtail styles, braided in the top or lower portion, and adorned with beads, LED lights, ribbons, or even butterfly clips. They’re perfect for summer because they keep your hair off your shoulders, and they’re easy to style.
Fun fact: Pigtails have been worn since the mid-1700’s.
If you’re ready to create your new favorite summer long hair hairdo, here’s how to do a basic French braided pigtail. Once you get more advanced, try using a different type of braid like bubble braids, or adding adornments.
You will need:
- Two hair ties
- A hair brush or a comb
- Finishing spray (optional)
To create this look:
- Brush all knots and tangles out of your hair.
- Separate your hair into two even sides down the middle.
- On one side, pull your hair back or to the side so it is loose.
- Separate your hair into three sections where you want the braid to start.
- With a basic French braid, weave the right strand over the middle, then the left over the middle until you have enough of a braid.
- If you want the braid to start against your head, use three smaller strands, then add more hair with equally sized smaller strands below.
- Secure the bottom of the braid with your hair tie, or where you want the braid to end so the remainder of hair can be in a ponytail.
- Now repeat on the other side.
- If you want to secure flyaways, mist the braids with a finishing spray.
